Meet the Head at Red Balloon Worthing
We recently had a chat with Kim Anderson, Head of Centre at Red Balloon Worthing, to learn more about her. Our Heads are a vital part of the Red Balloon Community, but there is so much more to them than just their title!
When you’re not here wearing the Head of Centre hat, what do you love to spend time doing?
When I’m not wearing my Head of Centre hat, I love to swim in the sea or any outdoor water, really. I’m also a big fan of yoga and going to see live music. My most recent concert was Coldplay at Wembley Stadium, which was brilliant!
If you had a totally free day—no responsibilities, no to-do lists—how would you spend it?
My dream day would be lying on a sunbed in a very warm climate, reading a book or two with the occasional dip in a pool or the sea!
Is there a quote or saying that always sticks with you, especially in this kind of work?
My favourite quote is by Oscar Wilde – “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Are there any particular values or vibes you’re trying to infuse into your Centre and/or Red Balloon as a whole?
I truly believe that everyone has to find their passion and that will help them want to learn. Don’t sweat the small stuff – I have never seen the point of telling students off for wearing make-up or dying their hair – who cares , as long as they turn up and want to learn more about the world?
What has been the most rewarding thing about working at Red Balloon?
The most rewarding thing about working at Red Balloon is watching our learners grow in confidence every day and then becoming amazing role models for our new learners.
What drew you to this role?
I was drawn to the role because it was so exciting, the prospect of setting up a brand new Centre which was so badly needed in West Sussex.
What has been the most challenging thing about being a Head?
The most challenging aspect of my role as Head is not being able to help everyone who wants to come to Red Balloon because we are full – I wish we had another Centre in Sussex.
What makes Red Balloon special?
Red Balloon is such a special community – it has helped so many young people re-engage with learning and build lasting friendships. I just love hearing from past learners about what they are doing now and their hopes and dreams for the future
