Red Balloon - Reading opened in September 2011 and has grown into a thriving community over the last three years.
Alongside a strong academic provision, we are able to offer music and drama therapy to all of our young people, and since the very beginning we have provided a whole host of extra-curricular opportunities from badminton to bake-sales and from kayaking to karate.
At the heart of our community are the students themselves and though the names and faces change from time to time, our cohort continues to be made up of the most courageous and caring young people in the Thames Valley area.
On any given day, once we've all had breakfast, we start the morning with an academic focus. Maths, English, science and humanities are all on offer, though our students have a lot of input into how they learn and at what pace. Lunch is provided by our housekeeper, Charlie, and is always delicious and healthy. Afternoons provide the opportunity to be more creative or active (sometimes both at the same time).
Our Centre is located within walking distance of Reading town centre and is just across the road from Reading College, which is handy for our year 11 students. We have lots of study rooms available, some larger spaces for group activities and some small for individual lessons and therapy session. We also have a garden, where we grow our own vegetables, and this is also a great place for lessons when the weather is nice.
Above all the Reading Centre is a warm and friendly place. I’m very proud to be a part of it, and I always look forward to welcoming new students into our community.
