Red Balloon – Norwich opened in 2006 as a full time Centre. In 2009 we moved to our current premises in Earlham Road.
We provide a safe environment for 11-16 year olds who are unable to access mainstream school due to their past experiences in bullying or trauma. We offer a therapeutic and academic curriculum.
As part of the therapeutic curriculum we offer counseling sessions, drama, Asdan, art, Japanese for fun and life skills along with a number of outside activities which are designed to help build up confidence and self-esteem. This includes TITAN, which supports safe independent travelling as a pedestrian or by public transport.
The academic curriculum is taught in small groups of up to three young people and covers KS3 and KS4. A range of subjects is offered at KS3 to enable each person to catch up with their peers in mainstream. At KS4 GCSEs can be taken in English, literature, mathematics, science, history, RE, geography, food technology, child development, textiles, business studies, and art. In addition to these subjects Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Awards are available to all.
The Centre is located close to the City Centre, which allows us easy access to various facilities. On entering you will be greeted by a member of staff or student along with a dog, who is part of the ‘safe family atmosphere’ that we are trying to create.
Red Balloon – Norwich was last inspected in June 2015. The report can be found at:
Trustees review policies annually - the chair of trustees signs a policy list (held in the centre office) to indicate that this has been carried out. Names of 'responsible staff' (eg examinations officer, fire officer) as required within policies are also available from the centre office.
If we receive a referral for a student with English as a second language, we will seek support from the pertinent Local Authority.
